PART II: THE WILL OF GOD AND PRAYER
CHAPTER 9
THE WILL OF GOD
CONCERNING SALVATION
What is the will of God? How can we be sure that we really
know the will of God? Why should we want to know the will of
God?
Since God loves us and wants the best for us, his motive is
pure. Since God knows exactly what we need, his knowledge and
wisdom are infinitely superior to ours. Also, he alone has the
power to bring into existence what we need. It therefore is
reasonable and wise to learn what his will is concerning certain
areas before we pray.
Jesus assures that if we pray according to God's will and
remain in right relationship with him, God will answer our
prayers:
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you,
ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be
done unto you. (John 15:7).
The Apostle John reinforces this truth:
And this is the confidence that we have in
him, that, if we ask any thing according to
his will, he heareth us: And if we know that
he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that
we have the petitions that we desired of him.
(1 John 5:14-15).
The Word of God reveals the will of God. No believer would
want to pray contrary to the will of God. To do so would be at
the least, less than best. At the most, it could be destructive.
What are some areas that are clearly shown to be the will of God
from the Bible? Let us start with salvation.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his
only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life. For God sent not his Son
into the world to condemn the world; but that
the world through him might be saved. (John
3:16-17).
Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD,
I have no pleasure in the death of the
wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way
and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil
ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
(Ezekiel 33:11).
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise,
as some men count slackness; but is
longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that
any should perish, but that all should come
to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9).
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are
heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take
my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am
meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find
rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy,
and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if
any man hear my voice, and open the door, I
will come in to him, and will sup with him,
and he with me. (Revelation 3:20).
The above scriptures demonstrate that it is God's will to save
all people.
Sinners are deceived by Satan:
And the great dragon was cast out, that old
serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which
deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out
into the earth, and his angels were cast out
with him. (Revelation 12:9).
The unsaved think that they are "doing their own thing,"
when in fact, they are serving Satan. They are being manipulated
by Satan, who is really their enemy. Satan is pushing their
buttons and pulling their strings:
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in
trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye
walked according to the course of this world,
according to the prince of the power of the
air [Satan], the spirit that now worketh in
the children of disobedience: Among whom
also we all had our conversation in times
past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling
the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and
were by nature the children of wrath, even as
others. (Ephesians 2:1-3).
Satan baits his hook with fleshly desires, material gain and
human pride. The sinner probably doesn't know that he has sold
his soul to Satan for a temporary thrill. However, contrary to
contemporary stories on TV, there is hope--the sinner can be
delivered.
And the Lord's servant must not quarrel;
instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to
teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him
he must gently instruct, in the hope that God
will grant them repentance leading them to a
knowledge of the truth, and that they will
come to their senses and escape from the trap
of the devil, who has taken them captive to
do his will. (2 Timothy 2:24-26, New
International Version).
If the sinner doesn't repent, Satan will destroy him. Satan will
use him for his own ends. When Satan is finished with the
sinner, he will then destroy him and cast him aside as a broken
toy. Then the sinner must spend an eternity separated from God.
Not only does the written Word (the Bible) state that it is
God's will for the sinner to be saved, but the Living Word (the
Lord Jesus Christ) does also. Everything Jesus was, said and did
demonstrates that God loves the sinner and wants to save him.
Jesus made broken men whole. He healed them spiritually,
emotionally, mentally, physically, materially and socially. This
is still God's will concerning sinners.
We are all sinners before we accept Christ as Savior. None
of us can save ourselves. That is why Christ died for us. None
of us can take any pride in our salvation. The glory alone
belongs to God.
After we are saved, we must trust God for the salvation of
our families. The conversion of the Philippian jailer ends with
all of his family being saved:
And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what
must I do to be saved? And they said,
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou
shalt be saved, and thy house. And they
spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to
all that were in his house. And he took them
the same hour of the night, and washed their
stripes; and was baptized, he and all his,
straightway. And when he had brought them
into his house, he set meat before them, and
rejoiced, believing in God with all his
house. (Acts 16:30-34).
Before we can be saved, Satan's power must be broken over us.
This hold over us can be anything from a sinful habit or an
intellectual trap to demon possession. Likewise, our families
are trapped by Satan. His power must be broken before we can
exercise our wills to accept Christ as Savior. God through
Christ has given us authority over Satan and his demons to break
their hold over our families. We exercise that authority in the
Name of Jesus.
